Counterpoise

Celebrating the rich interconnected stories of the natural world and collective memory.

A joint exhibition with fellow Canberran artist - Kathleen Potts

In their work, Kath and Karen invite viewers to
re-visit personal memories, creating a tapestry of emotional responses that honor both the beauty of the past and the impermanence of the present.

Kathleen Potts

Kathleen is a New Zealand born Australian painter based in Canberra.

Drawing on the natural world around her Kathleen investigates how personal narrative is

influenced by the subjective memory of place, setting up scenes which invite the imagination of the viewer to step directly into them with the goal of eliciting a personal and emotional response.

Grounded in the landscape, Kathleen’s sophisticated use of colour and elements of spontaneity and chance blend together to create scenes of still beauty, exploring themes of impermanency and memory of place.

Take a minute to write an introduction that is short, sweet, and to the point.

Vintage vases and family heirlooms, frayed textiles, floral patterns and the nuanced beauty of native flora.

These things hold a special place in the my heart - they encapsulate the stories of generations past and resonate with the heart of the land.

Observing the beauty in both the ephemeral and the enduring, fosters a deeper appreciation for the world around us.

Echoing the enduring beauty of Australian flora, delicate embroidered and painted details, my mixed media artworks tell stories of resilience, the passage of generations alongside precious objects and cherished heirlooms.

They explore narratives that celebrate and preserve familial traditions by recreating the subtle textures of vintage patinas with a palette inspired by native florals.

I carry a reverence for Japanese tissue, embroidery and textiles - Just as I mend and restore delicate papers and fibres as a conservator, in my artwork I explore the delicate interplay between nature, art, family and memory.
